I became friends with this girl in my first year of college (last year)…but I soon found the need to unfriend her. That may sound harsh, but you must imagine my desire not to be caught in any photos like this. Not that I’m better than her or anything, and I mean, I know she enjoys life…its just…we’re a different breed? Also she only ever talked about herself.

You knew it was coming. Well, maybe you did. I love this film almost as much as captainkirk. Almost. This is one of my favourite films of all-time, not just from the past decade. The dialogue is snappy, clever and comes at you really quickly. Sometimes I get caught up in the dialogue and forget about the storyline. But that’s okay. I’ve seen this movie so many times I know it beat for beat.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang takes itself seriously just enough to keep the audience engaged, the humour and many of the situations the characters get caught up in are outrageous enough to simply be incredibly entertaining. The phrase “kiss kiss, bang bang” first appeared in Europe and Japan in the 1960s as slang for spy films, most notably James Bond movies. The title is also a reference to the words Pauline Kael once saw on an Italian movie poster and later used as the title of one of her collections of film criticism. She feels that the phrase is pretty much what Hollywood had come down to: sex and guns.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang brings to light the negative side of films that are easily categorized and labeled into genres; Shane Black created a film that cannot be characterized no matter how hard we try, therefore escaping the scope of film categorization. It’s set in Los Angeles and centers around the often ludicrous lives of those who work in the film industry. In this way, it is not only a parody of genre, but also of those who create and propagate this tight system of classification. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang makes a bold statement on the movie industry as whole without being too obvious about it.

The director admitted to de-saturating the films colours in the post-production stage to give the film a cruder, rougher look. I thought this effectively made the film feel more like a pulp-noir, like the detective novels and films it referenced frequently. Lighting and music are key to film noir, and Black plays upon both of these things in order to create a new spin on the classic genre. The sharp, basic contrast of black and white, as well as the use of shadows created paranoia and suspicion in the narrative space of classic noir films.

Voiceover narration, as Robert McKee says in Adapation. Is “flaccid, sloppy writing. Any idiot can write a voice-over narration to explain the thoughts of a character.” Despite the fact that this is not always true, it could be argued that voiceover narration has been used in so many different films that it has very little appeal to most any modern audience. Harry’s narration in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was one of the best aspects of this film in my opinion. He guides us through the story while acknowledging not only his faults as a narrator, but the fact that he is starring in the film we are currently watching. The use of this theatrical device also allows Harry and the film to really make fun of themselves. I adore the way this film mocks every notion of the genre film, most specifically noir, from Harmony’s obsession with corny Johnny Gossamer novels, to the eerie interconnectedness of all the characters that reminds me of the end of Chinatown.

What is dry socket? Is this terminology I am unfamiliar with?

It is when you get a tooth removed and your blood doesn’t clot so your jawbone is exposed. it hurts like a motherfucker. of course, out of the 1-3% of people that get it, I do.

So I do have dry socket. which is when you get a tooth extracted and your blood doesn’t clot properly and so the bone is exposed. Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. it fucking kills. you don’t even know. Unless you do. In which case, doesn’t it fucking kill?

i went and got prescribed some tylenol 3s as well as picked up some clove oil. Oh dear me. please make it go away.
